Bandsman Arthur Warwick

Bandsman Arthur Warwick He was a Bandsman with the 2nd Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby), who was killed in action in France on 20th September 1914. His military number was 1045. The Bromley & Kentish Times reported that he had spent 6.5 years in India and was at home on a 6 months furlough when he was called up to re-join the regiment. Gunner Ernest Nelms

He was with the Royal Field Artiller. A shell from one of the enemy’s large guns fell close to the gun that Nelms was serving and devastated all around inflicting terrible injuries, who was close to death when he left the field. He was reported to have a sister, Mrs A Jinks living in Kingston, Ontario His fiancee, Miss Florence King, of Parkside, Wimbledon also received news from a comrade. In those days the films were shown continuously on Saturdays from 2pm to 10.15 pm and two performances on other days. Miss Margaret James Birkett

A nurse with the Red Cross, Miss Birkett had taken up nursing 3 years earlier. Her knowledge of French was invaluable when nursing the Belgian soldiers. She lived at Summerhill Villas, Chislehurst. The newspaper reported that she had been ill on the Tuesday (22nd Dec), very ill and had died on the Wednesday (23rd Dec). Probably the first nurse to die at her post.  She had been at Brooklyn temporary hospital in Lubbock Road, before being moved to Abbey Lodge. Details of funeral in the newspaper report.
