Whilst trawling through the newspapers of 1914-1919, Pam has come across many interesting articles which give us an insight into life both at the front line as well as back at home. Find Your Military Ancestors

Military Ancestors is a project created by Pam Preedy, which lists over 30,000 references to soldiers between 1914-1919, initially from the Bromley and District Times, in Kent. The data Pam has extracted from the newspapers include men who enlisted from 1914 to the beginning of 1916 when conscription was introduced; The names and addresses of some 1,500 men of the Bromley area who had signed up for the Derby Scheme, (a precursor to conscription and a failed attempt to prevent it), in 1915; Details of letters from the Western Front, India, S.…

Miss Margaret James Birkett

A nurse with the Red Cross, Miss Birkett had taken up nursing 3 years earlier. Her knowledge of French was invaluable when nursing the Belgian soldiers. She lived at Summerhill Villas, Chislehurst. The newspaper reported that she had been ill on the Tuesday (22nd Dec), very ill and had died on the Wednesday (23rd Dec). Probably the first nurse to die at her post.  She had been at Brooklyn temporary hospital in Lubbock Road, before being moved to Abbey Lodge. Details of funeral in the newspaper report. Sergeant E.S. Mussell

Served in the 1st Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment. An Army Reservist who had served in Malta previously.   He had married Miss Bessie Hilda Thompson, daughter of Mr H Thompson of Farnborough, 3 years previously, and had 2 sons aged 1 and 2.   He was called up on 5th August 194; left for France the following Thursday.   The Bromley & District Times reported him missing 20th November 1914, and then first reported his death as Killed in Action in January 1915.   He died on 26th October 1914…
