Captain John Peake Knight, of Sundridge Mansions, was the son of James Percy and Ellen Gray Knight, of 17, Castle Hill Avenue, Folkestone; and Grandson of the late Mr J P Knight for many years manager of the London Brighton and South Coast Railway.
He attended Quernmore School.
He had married his cousin, Miss Olive Phyllis Wall Row (formerly Knight), of 8, Rodborough Rd., Golders Green, Hampstead, London. She was a native of Brighton, and the eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs Gray Knight of Preston Park, Brighton. They married at St John’s Church, Bromley on 21st November, 1914. Had been in the thick of the fighting from Mons to Calais and got married during a few days leave that he had been granted. They had one daughter.
He joined the Royal Field Artillery in 1910 and was mentioned several times in despatches during the war.
Awarded the Companion of the Distinguished Service Order for conspicuous and consistent gallantry in assisting infantry, especially on November 10th 1914. He had shown himself full of enterprise and initiative. His work had much encouraged the infantry. has been in the army since 1910 .
He was killed in action instaneously during the Battle of the Somme on 31st August, 1915, aged 26 years.
He was buried at at Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, in Somme, France. The inscription on hisgrave reads “In command of the 35th Battery “Quo fas et gloria ducunt” (‘the right and glory lead’)
