A LUXURIOUS EVENING FOR THE MEN WHO DESERVED IT
With the 8th West Kents
Corporal Gutteridge, of Bromley, 1234, B Company, 8th Royal West Kents (the glorious West Kents) sends us an account of the Company’s concert, which took place on Boxing night, in an empty room adjoining a farm.
“Decorations were supplied by the boys, who had them sent from home in their Christmas parcels; tables were provided by the owner of the farm, refreshments were served out during the evening – cakes, Christmas pudding, apples, wine, tobacco.
The following contributed to the programme:
Company Officers
Sergeant T Lynch
Sergeant Geart
Corporal Brigden
Lance-Corporal E J Cooper
Lance-Corporal McDonald
Private Ware
Private Saunders
Private Apps
and others;
and a merry evening was wound up at 10.15 by calling for cheers for the officers, who attended.
We should have been in the trenches to-day, Corporal Gutteridge adds, but at the last minute arrangements were cancelled. I trust every eligible fellow has joined up; if not (providing, of course, that he has tried and been rejected), he’s in for a rough time when the boys come home.
Best wishes for the New Year to yourself and staff.”
