Bride daughter of Bromley Town Cricketer

A Surrey County Cricketer was married to the daughter of a member of Bromley Town C.C. at St Mary’s, Shortlands on Saturday morning.
Considerable interest was aroused by the event both in Bromley and Catford. The bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs J.A. Miller live at 25 Beadon Road, Bromley. For many years Mr. Miller has been a member of the Bromley Town Cricket Club, even for a longer period he has been a playing member of the Catford Wanderers C.C.
The bridegroom, Mr. John Frederick Parker (Jack Parker), is the son of Mr. J.T. Parker, and of the late Mrs. Parker, of Cheam, Surrey. Jack Parker is the well-known Surrey County cricketer, who has many excellent performances to his credit. He was selected to play for the England team to visit India, but the tour was cancelled owing to the war.
Mr Parker ad Miss Miller met at the ground of the Catford Wanderers, when the Surrey team played Catford. The bridegroom is now attached to a R.A.F. station as P.T.I., and has been doing this training work for over 12 months at present holding the rank of corporal.
The ceremony was performed by the Vicar, the Rev. J.F. Thornhill, and appropriate organ music was played. Given away by her father, the bride wore a dress of ivory satin, heart-shaped neck, and silk net veil, held in place by a spray of orchids. She carried a sheaf of camellias. The bridegroom’s gift to the bride was a gold wristlet watch, and his gold cuff-links were a gift from the bride.
The matron-of-honour was Mrs Mary Stewart, sister of the bride, and she was dressed in red velvet with Juliet cap to match and carried a bouquet of clove carnations. The bride’s mother was attired in a black frock, with satin trimmings, and black accessories, a silver fox cape ad a spray of orchids. The Matron-of-honour’s pearl necklace was a gift from the bridegroom.
The best man was Mr G. Dav___.
Th reception was held at 25 Beadon Road, Bromley, and the honeymoon was spent at Bournemouth, the bride travelling in an ice-blue frock with jacket, nigger brown suede accessories and squirrel coat, a gift from her father.
John Frederick ‘Jack’ Parker was an English cricketer who played the majority of this career with Surrey County cricket club. He never played Test cricket, although he was selected to play for the England team to play in India in 1939–40, however the tour never took place because of the outbreak of World War II. And sadly, the War also deprived him of six of what, judging by his age, might have been expected to be amongst his best seasons.
He married in January 1941 and lived locally until this death in 1983.
