Influenza – The Best Known Safeguard against Infection is Ovaltine

‘Ovaltine’ was developed in Switzerland by Dr. George Wander in 1865 where it is known by its original name Ovomaltine (from ovum, Latin for “egg”, and malt, originally its main ingredients.) In 1900 his son, Albert, took over the business and in 1909 brought it to England where he established the British company A. Wander Ltd.

It is believed that a misspelling of the name on the trademark registration application led to the name being shortened to Ovaltine in English-speaking markets. And so, it was sold as Ovaltine for the British market and became very popular with doctors as a health product.

Its popularity especially took off after the First World War based on a dual appeal as a nourishing food and a soothing bed time drink.

This advert appeared in local newspapers highlighting the health benefits of the drink for those suffering from the flu.

A Doctor’s striking tribute

To the Proprietors of Ovaltine!

Recently I was attacked by Influenza, but was unable to lie up with it owing to the demands of patients.

I can only attribute my ability to keep going, and my very rapid convalescence to ‘Ovaltine’;  for two days it was almost my only nourishment, and after that I took it freely in between ordinary meals; my recovery, in spite of long hours of work, was unexpectedly rapid, and within a week I was feeling extremely fot and vigorous.

Needless to say, I am passing in the results of my experience to my patients.

O feel is due to you to inform you o this; subject to the usual professional ethical restrictions, please make any use of this as you wish.

Yours faithfully
….. M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P
